First snow and first protest

Andie took her first trip to the mountains last week and saw snow for the first time! We had a wonderful time at Squaw Valley thanks to Aunt Sarah and Uncle Tony. There was a lot of snow on the drive -- it was beautiful!

The snow was as tall as Jason driving his truck in some places!

Kristin liked all of the icicles.

So much snow!

Upon arrival, Jason promptly taught Andie how to eat the snow. The rest of the time in the mountains, Kristin tried to refine Andie's snow selection criteria to exclude some questionable choices.

Andie found her jacket pockets for the first time on the trip, which was convenient because she refused to wear mittens.

Despite battling sickness and an ankle injury, Jason and Kristin hit the slopes one day while Grandma Jane watched Andie. It had been since the turn of the century since either of them had skied, and Kristin had only ever skied in the Midwest, which she had been told "didn't count." They had lots of fun spending the day together and trying not to hurt themselves on the easy runs!

While Kristin and Jason skied, Andie hung out with her cousin, Ellie. They toured the village together in Aunt Pam's wagon.

They even took a warm snooze together on Grandma Jane's lap.

We all had a fantastic time, and we're already looking forward to next year!

Though we enjoyed the cold, wintery weather at Squaw, we have been feeling particularly chilly about politics lately, and we were excited to participate in the Women's March in Santa Rosa this weekend to voice some of our distaste with the new administration. Kristin had fun making some signs, and said this about her march attendance:

Andie sported her pussy cat hat at the march.

It was wonderful to have Nana and Papa join us.

One of the highlights for Kristin was encountering her second ever uterus piƱata! The first was the one Ellie and James made for Andie's baby shower.

Andie's baby shower, January 2015

Looking back on that time when we were about to bring Andie into the world, though the political sphere has changed, we feel just as fortunate as we did then to have such wonderful family and friends, and to be surrounded by such an amazing community.

Deck reconstruction

The deck attached to the Herilino Annex was rotting away, so Uncle Chuck visited again to help give it an overhaul. Uncle Joe and cousin Karen generously helped out, and baby Andie even chipped in! Making a plan Demo nearly completed Adding new boards Finishing up the new railing Breaking for beer and strawberries More demo-ing Kristin and Andie were a little scared for Uncle Joe up there on those narrow old boards! Turning a deck into a roof Andie even helped to finish it all off! Ha, just kidding!  That's Jason's Cabbage Patch doll up there. Did you really think Jason would carry the baby on the roof? Sheesh, what kind of parents do you think Kristin and Jason are? Jason and Elden This post was created especially for Nana and Grandma Jane. Our apologies for any adverse health effects it may have triggered.

Changes

There have been a lot of changes over the past six weeks in the Herilino household. Perhaps the biggest is that Nani and Papa moved out! We were so happy to take them in after the fire, and we are even happier that they have found a new place of their own to call home (especially because it isn't in Iowa). They are again just a short drive away in Santa Rosa, and they even promised to still babysit one day a week. Nani and Papa really enjoyed spreading out after being relegated to such tight quarters at the Herilino house. Although they didn't have too much stuff to move, Andie helped them unpack some of their new things. She liked how the packing material stuck to their clean windows. They don't have much in the way of furniture yet either, but Nani and Papa made sure Andie felt comfortable by stocking their house with new toys, a kid's table, and a potty seat. We are already having lots of fun hanging out there. Andie loved trying ou...

Pizza & ready to crawl

Andie added pizza to her list of foods yesterday, doing right by her New York family heritage. Kristin spent her first night away from Andie last night to throw a bachelorette party for Auntie Ellie. Everyone survived! Andie seems to be pretty close to crawling these days, making Kristin and Jason wonder if they're going to have to dedicate some time to better baby-proofing soon.
