Eating and adventuring with friends

Having visitors generally means consuming calories and finding adventurous ways to burn them off (though, admittedly, not always equally). We were super lucky last weekend to have a visit from Kristin's dear friend, Rebecca, who was taking her colleague Philine on a tour of California.

The consumption portion of the visit involved checking out the new scenery and delicious new menu at Gourmet au Bay.

We took an obligatory trip to Howard's station, where Andie found all of her favorite items on the menu.

We shared some chips and salsa. Andie got her own bowl of salsa, as she is prone to double-dipping.

More?

We shared some (non-alcoholic) ginger beer.

Andie showed off her improving utensil skills.

We shared some nice meals with Kristin's parents, including some amazing spinach and sage dumplings made by Rebecca and Philine.

Good thing grandparents get a free pass to be a little nuts.

Kristin made some pomegranate cherry ice cream. Andie really enjoyed it, especially once she picked out all the cherries, which she normally likes, but in this case were clearly just getting in the way of the ice cream.

The feeling we all get when the ice cream is gone.

In the adventure category, Kristin, Andie, Rebecca and Philine went for a nice hike at Armstrong Redwoods.

That way, Becca!

It's just so tough to stay awake in the Osprey.

Andie and Rebecca played in the whale pool.

At the toy store, Rebecca even got to introduce Andie to her favorite type of invertebrate in puppet form.

Isopod puppet in action

Andie is understandably upset at the obvious anatomical inaccuracies of the isopod puppet.

Nana and Papa also had some fun at the park with Andie last week. She loved the slide!

It was super great to meet Philine and to see Rebecca. We really miss having Rebecca in the same county, but we're super excited to have her in the same country again, and we can't wait for her (and Mike's and Nebs's) next visit!

Deck reconstruction

The deck attached to the Herilino Annex was rotting away, so Uncle Chuck visited again to help give it an overhaul. Uncle Joe and cousin Karen generously helped out, and baby Andie even chipped in! Making a plan Demo nearly completed Adding new boards Finishing up the new railing Breaking for beer and strawberries More demo-ing Kristin and Andie were a little scared for Uncle Joe up there on those narrow old boards! Turning a deck into a roof Andie even helped to finish it all off! Ha, just kidding!  That's Jason's Cabbage Patch doll up there. Did you really think Jason would carry the baby on the roof? Sheesh, what kind of parents do you think Kristin and Jason are? Jason and Elden This post was created especially for Nana and Grandma Jane. Our apologies for any adverse health effects it may have triggered.

Changes

There have been a lot of changes over the past six weeks in the Herilino household. Perhaps the biggest is that Nani and Papa moved out! We were so happy to take them in after the fire, and we are even happier that they have found a new place of their own to call home (especially because it isn't in Iowa). They are again just a short drive away in Santa Rosa, and they even promised to still babysit one day a week. Nani and Papa really enjoyed spreading out after being relegated to such tight quarters at the Herilino house. Although they didn't have too much stuff to move, Andie helped them unpack some of their new things. She liked how the packing material stuck to their clean windows. They don't have much in the way of furniture yet either, but Nani and Papa made sure Andie felt comfortable by stocking their house with new toys, a kid's table, and a potty seat. We are already having lots of fun hanging out there. Andie loved trying ou...

Pizza & ready to crawl

Andie added pizza to her list of foods yesterday, doing right by her New York family heritage. Kristin spent her first night away from Andie last night to throw a bachelorette party for Auntie Ellie. Everyone survived! Andie seems to be pretty close to crawling these days, making Kristin and Jason wonder if they're going to have to dedicate some time to better baby-proofing soon.
