Introducing Jack Michael!

After a long hiatus of not posting, some exciting news from Team Herilino!

Baby Jack Michael arrived on Wednesday, January 31st at 11:27 AM weighing in at 7 lbs, 15 oz and 21 inches long. As we did when we welcomed Andie into our family, we feel so overwhelmed by the love and support that helped bring him into the world!

After the fire destroyed Kristin's parents home in October, we found hope in this Mizuta Masahide quote: "My barn having burned to the ground, I can now see the moon." Seems especially fitting that this baby boy chose to come into the world the morning of the super blue blood moon.

Kristin enjoyed the nitrous oxide that helped bring Jack into the world.

Jack's labor and delivery were much faster than Andie's (~8 hrs to Andie's ~56!), and Kristin and Jason made it to the hospital less than an hour before he was born. We had our wonderful doula, Connie, with us again to help with Jack's transition out of utero (of course, everything happened so fast that we failed to snap a pic with her this time around!).

Jason re-acquainted himself with meconium in the hospital.

Kristin got a video of some of Jack's first squeaks and sneezes:

It didn't take long for Jack to get indoctrinated into the world of ocean science, thanks to this amazing abalone-larval-phase onesie from Kristin's colleague Malina.

Jack was pretty chill about his first car ride home from the hospital.

Papa made a wonderful sign to welcome him home!

Andie is super excited to be a big sister and is adjusting well. She got to come to the hospital after Jack was born to meet him.

Nana and Papa were excited to meet Jack, too!

Jack got some super thoughtful gifts for Andie to thank her for being his big sister: an ice cream set and a dentist Barbie.

Kristin put together montage of side-by-side photos of her meeting her baby brother, Michael, and Andie meeting baby brother Jack.

Jack has met lots of new people over the past week! On February 1st he met Ben:

On February 2nd he met Kristen, who has just started taking care of Andie.

On February 2nd, Jack also got to meet Ellie and James, who had graciously watched Hawkeye during his delivery.

Grandma Jane and Grandpa Stan visited over the weekend (February 3rd & 4th):

They made sure to give big sister, Andie, lots of Grandma and Grandpa time, too, and even took her out to the beach.

Grandma Jane made a beautiful quilt for Jack.

We had a nice family toast to the newest member of Team Herilino!

On February 4th, Jack got to meet Jay, Naomi, and Tashi.

Jay brought over some delicious Latvian perogies that didn't last very long!

On February 5th he met Patricia and Shayne, and we all enjoyed some delicious homemade sourdough from Scott.

Andie also took Jack on his first trip to the park down the road on the 5th, and she showed him how to use the swings:

On February 6th Jack met Rita ...

... and Sophie.

He can't wait to meet more of his extended family!

Kristin got a plush squid for him so we can track his growth by it like we did for Andie. Here is his first squid photo shoot, at 1 week old:

It has been an amazing first week of life, and we're so excited for what's ahead!

First milk mustache

Jack likes to stick out his big toes!

Changes

There have been a lot of changes over the past six weeks in the Herilino household. Perhaps the biggest is that Nani and Papa moved out! We were so happy to take them in after the fire, and we are even happier that they have found a new place of their own to call home (especially because it isn't in Iowa). They are again just a short drive away in Santa Rosa, and they even promised to still babysit one day a week. Nani and Papa really enjoyed spreading out after being relegated to such tight quarters at the Herilino house. Although they didn't have too much stuff to move, Andie helped them unpack some of their new things. She liked how the packing material stuck to their clean windows. They don't have much in the way of furniture yet either, but Nani and Papa made sure Andie felt comfortable by stocking their house with new toys, a kid's table, and a potty seat. We are already having lots of fun hanging out there. Andie loved trying ou...

Farmhouse

Team Herilino had a fun-filled trip to the little red farmhouse this weekend to see wonderful friends. Andie got to see her buddy Sam, who she hadn't seen since she was six months old. Andie and Sam, July 2016 Andie and Sam, September 2015 They got reaquainted via some hand touching. It was the perfect coastal summer day. We ate some tasty food -- Andie particularly enjoyed the strawberries. Andie showed everyone how to boogie to the music. They picked up her instruction quickly. Jason taught Andie to skateboard. Andie was very excited to join the big kids for a round of frisbee golf on the hillsides beyond the fence. The frisbee crew She loved riding the wagon full of discs back to the house. Steve took some drone footage of the surroundings while we were golfing (you can see the footage here: https://www.skypixel.com/share/video/the-farm-house-171c2db9-64b8-486c-bb59-8c4...

More visitors and first real bath

Andie met Uncle Joe and Auntie Sue yesterday. It was wonderful to have them visit, and we wish they could have stayed longer! They brought some delicious Kalua Pork and lemon bars, and even made a run to Wild Flour Bread this morning for some breakfast treats! Andie had her first bath in her infant tub last night, and she loved it! She lost her umbilical cord stump a little over a week ago, so she can finally submerge her cute little belly button. She's clearly well on her way to dive training!
